Here’s the challenge; find where Leinie is posing, take your dog’s picture in the same spot, or as close as they can physically get. Send the picture and the exact location to renee@followmedogtraining.com. Please send your pictures as an attachment so I can post them!
The first picture I receive with a dog in the correct spot, will win a prize from Follow Me Dog Training LLC, have their dog’s picture posted on the blog and get bragging rights for a month.
The current month’s picture will always be on our Where’s Leinie? page!
Be safe and responsible, please pick up after your dog. Now go out and explore Richmond Virginia with your dog!
This challenge is open to anyone in the area, even non- Follow Me Dog Training LLC clients!
Congrats go out to Chloe for finding Leinie in July at the Main Street Station in Richmond VA! When trainer, Renée, was young, she and her family used to drive from Maryland to Georgia to visit relatives and there are three things she remembers most about going through Richmond. 1) The toll roads on 95 South…and we can’t tell you how glad those don’t exist any more! 2) Seeing The Diamond as we drove down 95 S. 3) being in awe of the clock tower of the Main Street Station. So it was a given that Leinie would go downtown to visit this landmark! It is beautiful down there and lots of places for Leinie to hop around and practice his “place” command!
Chloe wasn’t in the exact same spot as Leinie but she was the closest! Well done Chloe for going out and exploring!
Follow Me Dog Training LLC took a poll at the beginning of the summer to see what our clients and dogs wanted to do for group class during the “Dog Days Of Summer” in Richmond Virginia. Unanimously they all decided that lessons at the James River, teaching the dogs to swim, would be the best use of our time.
We’ve turned a few dogs into fish and seen some dogs grow more confident each week. It has been a wonderful class. Follow Me Dog Training LLC wants to thank everyone for coming to these group classes and having fun. Not every dog (including those Labradors) know how to swim. You’ll notice in the pictures, Darcy with a life vest on, and you’ll see me helping some of the dogs in the water with a leash, or holding on to them.
So some lessons learned during group class this July:
If they sneak attack, two Boxers (Grady Beans & Tyson) can dunk Renée
Ni’cko the husky, swims much like an alligator stalking the shoreline
It is important to realize how much water your dog has had to drink and that they may need to pee 10 times once you get home.
“Everyone to the right!” means move to the right and stop with your dog. Then wait while an unruly dog and it’s owners pass by a line of 15 dogs well behaved and sitting for their owners! That is a very cool sight!
The James River is constantly changing and the dogs need help finding rocks to stand on and to not go too far out because of the current.
Having the ability to have our dogs off leash and under control is one of the coolest things ever!
Because Renée had to be in the water most of the time, a good portion of the pictures were taken by clients. Thanks to those that shared all the cool pictures!
Be careful in the heat everyone! Keep your dogs cool and provide them plenty of shade, air conditioning and fresh cold water!

Frappy was intently watching, when not licking the ears of the person in front of her
Near the end of the game, Frappy and I had the opportunity to chat with the owner of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Lou Dibella. Lou was a very nice guy and we were so glad he chatted with us and told us about his little Rat Terrier.
Dog friendly opportunities are something to be treasured and we were so happy to see so many well behaved dogs at The Diamond on wed night. I’m looking forward to the next event.

Frappy and I are excited to check out a baseball game. Frappy is nuts about squirrels and balls…but I’m not sure she has been listening to my explanations of what is really happening!

Walking should be an important part of every dog’s life and we are their partners in this task. I good brisk walk helps them and us. Try to build up to a 45 minute walk a day, or two 20 minute walks a day. I guarantee your dog will be better behaved and more tired. Oh and if you jog/run with your dog, make sure they are at least a year old and you start slow, they need to build up their stamina as well. ***Also please talk to your vet if you are looking to start a sport or running habit with your dog..start off on a healthy paw!
Make sure the games you play with your dogs are healthy and safe. Games such as fetch, search and catch are wonderful games to teach your dog. One of my favorite games though is to call the dog between two or more people while teaching the dog your names! Just think how brilliant your friends will think your dog is if you say “Go find Mom!” and off he goes!
Feeding a good diet is important to health. I choose to feed my dog Life’s Abundance. It is a healthy nutritious food. In the foods I feed my dogs, I want there to be no corn, low levels of grains and absolutely no by-products. I encourage everyone to make an informed decision about the food you feed your dog, it makes a difference in so many aspects of the dogs world from manners and behavior to what you are picking up at the end of the day.
Flea and tick preventatives are also part of keeping your dog healthy! After a romp in the woods, be sure to look for ticks. Talk to your vet about the appropriate treatment.
You can go hiking, biking, walking, running and swimming with your dog! All these activities will help create a unique bond between you and your dog! If your dog is too out of control to enjoy these activities….contact Follow Me Dog Training LLC for a FREE evaluation in the Richmond Virginia area!
Stella’s owners did a really smart thing. They had an annual appointment set up for Stella to receive vaccinations and a routine check up. Stella goes to VCA Total Care Animal Hospital in Richmond VA. Unfortunately for Stella, her last visit to the vet was less then pleasant for everyone involved and Stella had a special mark on her file.
I love that her owners decided to be proactive and give me a call to help them with Stella’s problems at the vet. Before she would enter the office, already worked up. Panting heavily, barking, bulling, growling at everyone and every dog she met, not sitting still on the scale and making it known that a small Boston Terrier with a big attitude had arrived. All her craziness, as you can imagine, had her owners a bit nervous and high strung as well. Energy affects energy and we needed to calm everyone down so the trip to the vet was something to be looked forward to.
We spent a couple lessons working on a routine for going to the vet:
we worked for calmness getting into the car at home and getting out of the car at the vet’s parking lot.
We worked for a chance to walk calmly to a potty spot and empty out.
We worked for a solid sit while the owner opened the door and saw who or what was in the waiting room.
We worked for a calm entrance into the hospital and a sit stay while the owner talked to the person at the front desk.
We worked for a good “place” command on the scale so we could see a weight.
We worked on Stella being calm and in a down at the owner’s feet while we waited for an exam room to be ready.
We worked on calm heeling to the exam room.
We worked on being picked up and relaxing on the exam table.
We worked on having the Animal Hospital staff understand that for Stella, her owner could hold her and Stella would be calmer and they would be able to take temperature and give shots.
We worked on looking in her ears, eyes and mouth and touching her all over to prepare her for a physical exam
We worked on praising and talking to her at the right moments to help keep her calm while she was being examined.
We worked on leaving the exam room calmly and sitting while the bill was taken care of.
The Vet and the Tech helping her out were awesome and loved that Stella’s owners had done some prep work to make Stella’s visit to the vet less chaotic. Stella’s owner did fantastic in keeping calm and focused on Stella. Stella did amazing! I am very proud of Stella and her owner for a successful visit to the vet, it was fun and enjoyable. Stella deserved the treat and the loving at the end of her visit!
Do you dread going to the vet with your dog? Training helps! If you check out all the things we worked on with Stella, you’ll see that they all have a foundation in the commands Follow Me Dog Training LLC teaches in the Successful Living Program and our Board and Train Program. Please contact us for a FREE evaluation if you need help getting your dog to the vet!
