Frappy, Loki and Odin and their respective humans all had fun at Fido’s after Five at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. It was rainy…really rainy but we still managed to see a good portion of the Garden before becoming soaked through.
We were sad that the poor weather kept so many of our other four and two footed friends away but we had fun. During the first rain burst, we hung out in the tree house for awhile with a Weimaraner named Titanium.
Then we made a mad dash through the Asian Valley….
Then on to the Conservatory where we waited out another cloud burst. We really wish they did a Fido’s after Five in the fall when it wasn’t so hot for the dogs and we can really enjoy the Garden without the threat of a summer storm. Looks like they have alot of cool stuff going on all year. I have to say though I would love to take my dogs, a good book and some decent weather and sit under a tree for awhile. I can only imagine what it looks like when more things don’t look drowned out and wet!
Thanks Loki and Odin for sitting through the rain with us!

Follow Me Dog Training LLC took a poll at the beginning of the summer to see what our clients and dogs wanted to do for group class during the “Dog Days Of Summer” in Richmond Virginia. Unanimously they all decided that lessons at the James River, teaching the dogs to swim, would be the best use of our time.
We’ve turned a few dogs into fish and seen some dogs grow more confident each week. It has been a wonderful class. Follow Me Dog Training LLC wants to thank everyone for coming to these group classes and having fun. Not every dog (including those Labradors) know how to swim. You’ll notice in the pictures, Darcy with a life vest on, and you’ll see me helping some of the dogs in the water with a leash, or holding on to them.
So some lessons learned during group class this July:
If they sneak attack, two Boxers (Grady Beans & Tyson) can dunk Renée
Ni’cko the husky, swims much like an alligator stalking the shoreline
It is important to realize how much water your dog has had to drink and that they may need to pee 10 times once you get home.
“Everyone to the right!” means move to the right and stop with your dog. Then wait while an unruly dog and it’s owners pass by a line of 15 dogs well behaved and sitting for their owners! That is a very cool sight!
The James River is constantly changing and the dogs need help finding rocks to stand on and to not go too far out because of the current.
Having the ability to have our dogs off leash and under control is one of the coolest things ever!
Because Renée had to be in the water most of the time, a good portion of the pictures were taken by clients. Thanks to those that shared all the cool pictures!
Be careful in the heat everyone! Keep your dogs cool and provide them plenty of shade, air conditioning and fresh cold water!

We are proud to know them and were happy to do this interview. Follow Me Dog Training LLC encourages you to check out their site. They have a lot of cool stuff in their blogs and videos and if you are in the Austin Texas area, check them out!

National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, and is widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world. In 2010, National Pet Week is celebrated from May 2-8.
The goals of National Pet Week are to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine. - http:petweek.org
Walking should be an important part of every dog’s life and we are their partners in this task. I good brisk walk helps them and us. Try to build up to a 45 minute walk a day, or two 20 minute walks a day. I guarantee your dog will be better behaved and more tired. Oh and if you jog/run with your dog, make sure they are at least a year old and you start slow, they need to build up their stamina as well. ***Also please talk to your vet if you are looking to start a sport or running habit with your dog..start off on a healthy paw!
Make sure the games you play with your dogs are healthy and safe. Games such as fetch, search and catch are wonderful games to teach your dog. One of my favorite games though is to call the dog between two or more people while teaching the dog your names! Just think how brilliant your friends will think your dog is if you say “Go find Mom!” and off he goes!
Feeding a good diet is important to health. I choose to feed my dog Life’s Abundance. It is a healthy nutritious food. In the foods I feed my dogs, I want there to be no corn, low levels of grains and absolutely no by-products. I encourage everyone to make an informed decision about the food you feed your dog, it makes a difference in so many aspects of the dogs world from manners and behavior to what you are picking up at the end of the day.
Flea and tick preventatives are also part of keeping your dog healthy! After a romp in the woods, be sure to look for ticks. Talk to your vet about the appropriate treatment.
You can go hiking, biking, walking, running and swimming with your dog! All these activities will help create a unique bond between you and your dog! If your dog is too out of control to enjoy these activities….contact Follow Me Dog Training LLC for a FREE evaluation in the Richmond Virginia area!

Leinie went exploring this April to Rocketts Landing. Did you know that Rocketts Landing was once considered “the busiest inland port in America” Yep, thanks to Robert Rocketts in 1730 for developing a ferry service. It was also a home to the James River Squadron of the Confederate Army.
Rocketts Landing has been rebuilt and has some cool places to walk with your dog!
Congrats go out to Georgia for finding Leinie!
We also had some other dogs find Rocketts Landing:
Chloe the Boxer
Whiskey and Blaze the Goldens
Jackson the lab mix (Thanks for the tribute to Pepper!)
Thanks for the adventure! Keep an eye out for the next Where’s Leinie? picture for May 2010!

Here at Follow Me Dog Training LLC we believe in taking care of our earth everyday. Earth Day is celebrated on 22 April every year for a reason though:
It was the idea of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. On April 22nd, 1970 over 20 million Americans participated in the first Earthday. With no true governing body it grew from the people involved and marked the beginning of the Environmental movement. A special was shown on CBS titled “Earth Day: A Question of Survival”. -news.gather.com
There are alot of festivals, celebrations and activities going on today and this weekend that bring focus on to the environment and Earth Day in particular. In Richmond Virginia, the Richmond Earth Day Festival is being held on Sunday 25 April 2010. If Follow Me Dog Training LLC was going to be in town, we would be there! So we encourage everyone to go out and celebrate our Earth. If you aren’t in Richmond this weekend, check your local area for any Earth Day events that may be happening!
Why celebrate the earth for only one day though? Most of us make a conscious effort to help our planet out in some way everyday. Recent studies by a pair of New Zealand scientists showed that owning a pet isn’t very eco-friendly, that won’t stop me from owning a pet, but it will make me more aware of the carbon footprint it leaves on our environment. Here are some ideas from Follow Me Dog Training LLC on how you and your dog can help keep our planet green and reduce your carbon paw print.
We all pick up after our dogs right? Try using some bio-degradable poop bags from www.PoopBags.com.
Both Leinie and Frappy wear Hemp collars from The Good Dog Company. Bonus that this company makes a collar with part of our logo on it… but chances are good the dogs would be wearing these collars anyway.
Eco-Friendly toys come in all shapes and sizes. Frappy and Leinie love the toys from Planet Dog. West Paw Design also make some great toys that are recyclable. Earthdoggy.com also has a catalog of earth friendly products!
Check out Dog Bed Street for a comfy place for your dogs to rest!
Spaying and neutering your pet (when you are ready and your dog is ready, we are against laws mandating spay/neuter but for healthy pets) is a great way to reduce over population and cut down on the resources needed to keep shelters open.
Instead of driving to the store, walk your dog and teach your dog to wear a back pack so he can help carry stuff home. www.ruffwear.com makes some great back packs!
If you have any old towels, blankets or sheets that you might toss…instead take them to your vet’s office or a local shelter. They always need more bedding!
Carry water for you and your dog in stainless steel or BPA free bottles. We like Sigg and Nalgene!
Taking care of our earth is so important. I want my dogs to be able to romp in green fields, breath clean air and enjoy the solitude of a vast forest for many years to come. Heck I want all that stuff for myself as well. Follow Me Dog Training LLC encourages you to make some changes and Go Green!

Grab your dog and your family and come on out on 2 May 2010 for a walk around the Azalea Garden in Joseph Bryan Park in Richmond Virgina. We’ll take a stroll around the park and enjoy the company of our dogs and get some exercise as well. We’ll meet at the parking lot by the soccer fields at 10:00am and walk for about an hour.
The goals of National Pet Week are to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine.
This year’s National Pet Week is promoting the motto “Pets & People Healthy Together”. We encourage you to have Fit Dog Fit National Day be the start of a new exercise habit for you and your dog! We know as humans, exercise as a way of life makes us happier, healthier people, it works the same way for our dogs.
If you can’t join us for our walk, consider doing something active with your dog on 2 May 2010 to celebrate the day! Celebrate the wonderful idea of working toward and maintaining a level of fitness with your dog and self!
Our walk at the Azalea Garden in Joseph Bryan Park is open to everyone with a dog! We ask that you please follow park rules and keep your dog on a leash and pick up after your dog! Dogs are only allowed on the road surrounding the Azalea Garden, please don’t ruin a great walk by breaking the rules!
Follow Me Dog Training LLC hopes to see you there! And if owner/trainer Renée Lamoureux doesn’t know you, please come introduce you and your dog!
Special thanks go out to JT Clough the K9 Coach of San Diego for helping promote Fit Dog Fit Nation Day! She has some great ideas about bringing out the athlete in you and your dog!
