Maggie
Today is another sad day for Follow Me Dog Training LLC. Today marks the passing of 15 yr old Irish Terrier, Scolaidhe’s Irish Maggie. If you have read the Meet the Trainer page on our website, it tells about an Irish Terrier that entered the Lamoureux household in 1995. This puppy, Maggie, was a catalyst in Renée’s dog training career.
Maggie was a pain in the butt puppy that needed training to turn into the amazing dog she was. Her puppy hood was tough and made me curious about why we just couldn’t get her to listen. She was the start of a conversation with an eye doctor that convinced me to look into training dogs. When I returned from my first dog training school (National K9 School for Dog Trainers), she was the first dog I trained in Maryland. She was the inspiration behind the logo for my first business, Pawsitive Obedience. Because of Maggie we went to our first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Washington DC and were pulled into the parade with the other Irish Terriers…that was the parade where I met Pepper. She was a 10+ year veteran of therapy work, working with Pets On Wheels in Montgomery County MD, she visited an assisted living home every Tuesday, including Sept 11 2001.

Dogs don’t live long enough. They provide us with so much that I suppose they give all they can for the limited time they are with us and then pass us on to the dogs they have trained to take their place. I know that Maggie raced over the hill in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge and was greeted heartily by Pepper and the Lamoureux’s first Irish Terrier, Carrie.
When lessons are over and I sit down with Leinie and Frappy tonight, I’ll open a Guinness and say a toast to two red headed Irish girls. I’ll tell them why when you own an Irish Terrier, they make you either cry or laugh everyday, and I’ll tell them tales of Irish Terriers that no regular dog owner would ever believe. And then I’ll bury another Irish Terrier in my heart.

The May 2010 Where’s Leinie? challenge took Leinie out to the Richmond National Battlefield of Cold Harbor. The Battle of Cold Harbor was one of the bloodiest campaigns of the American Civil War. This battle was fought May 31-June 12 1864. It was Robert E Lee’s last major victory and one of Ulysses S. Grant’s worst losses. Like Leinie, you can go out to Mechanicsville VA and walk around the battlefield and experience history first hand.
Woody and his family found Leinie and the cannon he was posing in front of. Congrats to Woody!

Follow Me Dog Training LLC wants to thank the Richmond Flying Squirrels for a fun filled night of dogs and baseball! Although the score wasn’t in the Flying Squirrels favor we had a blast!
A group of dogs and their owners, all members of the Follow Me Dog Training LLC family descended on the Diamond. Frappy, Loki, Odin, Meadow, Tyson, Chloe, Kosmo, Penny, Melvin, Buddy, Annie, Darcey, Stella, Bella, Moose, Georgia, Molly (I know I am forgetting someone!)had a great time. Follow Me Dog Training LLC is very proud of all the dogs that showed up and made it a fantastic night!
I wish that Bark in the Park night was more often! We’ll keep an eye out for more dog friendly events and hope to have a crowd at them as well. Thanks everyone!

Near the end of the game, Frappy and I had the opportunity to chat with the owner of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Lou Dibella. Lou was a very nice guy and we were so glad he chatted with us and told us about his little Rat Terrier.
Dog friendly opportunities are something to be treasured and we were so happy to see so many well behaved dogs at The Diamond on wed night. I’m looking forward to the next event.

Wed. May 19 2010 The Richmond Flying Squirrels is having a Bark in the Park night. If you buy tickets through the Richmond SPCA, $2 will go to help orphaned animals.
Follow Me Dog Training LLC is planning on being there to see the Flying Squirrels take on the Erie Seawolves. We are going to have a group of about 23 Follow Me Dog Training LLC dogs with us.
Frappy and I are excited to check out a baseball game. Frappy is nuts about squirrels and balls…but I’m not sure she has been listening to my explanations of what is really happening!

National Pet Week is 2-8 May 2010!!! Follow Me Dog Training LLC started off the week with a walk in the park for Fit Dog Fit Nation day. This year National Pet Week is concentrating on health! Obesity and unhealthy habits are an unfortunate reality in both our human world and the dog world.
National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, and is widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world. In 2010, National Pet Week is celebrated from May 2-8.
The goals of National Pet Week are to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine. - http:petweek.org
Walking should be an important part of every dog’s life and we are their partners in this task. I good brisk walk helps them and us. Try to build up to a 45 minute walk a day, or two 20 minute walks a day. I guarantee your dog will be better behaved and more tired. Oh and if you jog/run with your dog, make sure they are at least a year old and you start slow, they need to build up their stamina as well. ***Also please talk to your vet if you are looking to start a sport or running habit with your dog..start off on a healthy paw!
Make sure the games you play with your dogs are healthy and safe. Games such as fetch, search and catch are wonderful games to teach your dog. One of my favorite games though is to call the dog between two or more people while teaching the dog your names! Just think how brilliant your friends will think your dog is if you say “Go find Mom!” and off he goes!
Feeding a good diet is important to health. I choose to feed my dog Life’s Abundance. It is a healthy nutritious food. In the foods I feed my dogs, I want there to be no corn, low levels of grains and absolutely no by-products. I encourage everyone to make an informed decision about the food you feed your dog, it makes a difference in so many aspects of the dogs world from manners and behavior to what you are picking up at the end of the day.
Flea and tick preventatives are also part of keeping your dog healthy! After a romp in the woods, be sure to look for ticks. Talk to your vet about the appropriate treatment.

Here at Follow Me Dog Training LLC we believe in taking care of our earth everyday. Earth Day is celebrated on 22 April every year for a reason though:
It was the idea of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. On April 22nd, 1970 over 20 million Americans participated in the first Earthday. With no true governing body it grew from the people involved and marked the beginning of the Environmental movement. A special was shown on CBS titled “Earth Day: A Question of Survival”. -news.gather.com

There are alot of festivals, celebrations and activities going on today and this weekend that bring focus on to the environment and Earth Day in particular. In Richmond Virginia, the Richmond Earth Day Festival is being held on Sunday 25 April 2010. If Follow Me Dog Training LLC was going to be in town, we would be there! So we encourage everyone to go out and celebrate our Earth. If you aren’t in Richmond this weekend, check your local area for any Earth Day events that may be happening!
Why celebrate the earth for only one day though? Most of us make a conscious effort to help our planet out in some way everyday. Recent studies by a pair of New Zealand scientists showed that owning a pet isn’t very eco-friendly, that won’t stop me from owning a pet, but it will make me more aware of the carbon footprint it leaves on our environment. Here are some ideas from Follow Me Dog Training LLC on how you and your dog can help keep our planet green and reduce your carbon paw print.
- We all pick up after our dogs right? Try using some bio-degradable poop bags from www.PoopBags.com.
- Both Leinie and Frappy wear Hemp collars from The Good Dog Company. Bonus that this company makes a collar with part of our logo on it… but chances are good the dogs would be wearing these collars anyway.
- Eco-Friendly toys come in all shapes and sizes. Frappy and Leinie love the toys from Planet Dog. West Paw Design also make some great toys that are recyclable. Earthdoggy.com also has a catalog of earth friendly products!
- Check out Dog Bed Street for a comfy place for your dogs to rest!
- Spaying and neutering your pet (when you are ready and your dog is ready, we are against laws mandating spay/neuter but for healthy pets) is a great way to reduce over population and cut down on the resources needed to keep shelters open.
- Instead of driving to the store, walk your dog and teach your dog to wear a back pack so he can help carry stuff home. www.ruffwear.com makes some great back packs!
- If you have any old towels, blankets or sheets that you might toss…instead take them to your vet’s office or a local shelter. They always need more bedding!
- Carry water for you and your dog in stainless steel or BPA free bottles. We like Sigg and Nalgene!
Taking care of our earth is so important. I want my dogs to be able to romp in green fields, breath clean air and enjoy the solitude of a vast forest for many years to come. Heck I want all that stuff for myself as well. Follow Me Dog Training LLC encourages you to make some changes and Go Green!
