Buddy Found Leinie!

Congratulations to Buddy for going out in the rain (and lets face it folks we haven’t had many sunny days this March)! Buddy posed perfectly and although he looks like a black spot on the picture..I can tell it is him! I think he is even on the exact same railroad tie as Leinie!

So Where’s Leinie? He is at RF&P Park which is connected to Crump Park and the Meadow Farm Museum. The park has baseball, softball, Football fields, and tennis courts. But most of all it has these really cool old rail cars from the RF&P line. Great walking trails and wonderful distractions are also a part of the park! We had a few people try to Google the caboose, but couldn’t come up with the correct location. Oddly enough, many of the Follow Me Dog Training LLC   dogs that have spent the day with me, have walked past and “placed” on these trains! If only your dogs could tell you!

A special shout out to Killian and Reilly’s owner who actually knew exactly where this caboose was, but never took her dogs to have their pictures taken. Get out and walk with your dogs!!!!

Check in April for the new Where’s Leinie? picture. Have fun this spring with your dogs! Go out exploring!

Fun at the park!

We had a beautiful day at Deep Run Park. Six Follow Me Dog Training LLC clients (L-R in picture above Emily, Bandit, Spencer, Melvin on top, Sasha and Reilly) came out for a group class full of distractions. The park was full of kids, adults, people on bikes, dogs, geese, ducks, lunatic squirrels….you name it, I think we saw it. Every dog (and every human) did a fantastic job working on their good manners and learning a few new tricks along the way.

For me I think it was very cool to be at a park with six well behaved dogs, walking nicely with their owners and having a tail wagging good time!

Group class is a fun addition to our training programs. If you are interested in a FREE consultation with Follow Me Dog Taining LLC, contact us by phone or through the website.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrate the Irish Dog!

My favorite of all Irish Dogs, as most of you know, is the Irish Terrier.

I’ve had an Irish Terrier in my life since I was in the third grade. It is hard to imagine life without one. My current Irish, Pepper, is a saucy red head with a heart of gold. Some of the Follow Me Dog Training LLC clients have met her. She is retired from working, but still comes out once in awhile to have fun and prove that she is in charge. Pepper and I met at the Washington D.C. St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1998. She was a 9 month old teenager barking, pouncing and charming all the children along the parade route. When I went to see if we were compatible, I knew right off the bat she was a force to be reckoned with as she raced out of a bedroom in her foster house with a pair of pink underwear in her mouth, around myself, off the couch, through the kitchen and into the big back yard. On the way back in she planted her paws squarely on my chest and did a sort of back flip off me and woofed at me. I loved her instantaneously! We have had our training challenges and have come to an understanding that suites us both! That Irish Terrier spirit…the personality that as most IT owners will tell you, makes you laugh and cry everyday!

Being quite leggy and fearless, The Irish Terrier can chase down it’s prey (bred to hunt otter, fox, rats and other vermin) and dispatch them easily. According to Breeder Retriever, by the 1880’s The Irish Terrier’s were the fourth most popular dog breed in England. They were used in WWI as messenger and watch dogs, receiving many commendations for finding wounded soldiers. There are stories far and wide about the “red devil terrier”, “the hellfire Irish with the heart of a lion and the soul of an angel”,  and English writer F. M. Jowett described them as “The poor man’s sentinel, the farmer’s friend and the gentleman’s favorite”. My favorite description is by that of the National Kennel Club  regarding their temperament; “A heedless, reckless pluck and blind to all consequences, will rush headlong at an adversary. They have the courage of a lion and will fight to their last breath and yet they are good tempered, notably with humans.”

The Irish Terrier is not a breed for everyone, and you rarely see them unless it is a grand occasion like St. Patrick’s day or a Celtic festival and then you may see them out in force (guard your Guinness and prepare to laugh!)

My family was surprised with our first Irish Terrier and we were all pretty astounded by the nature and presence that Carrie had. She epitomized the Irish Terrier, a fighter (taking down two Afghan Hounds at a time), a hunter of geckos, crickets, squirrels, chipmunks and cats, she was loyal to our family and had a sense of humor. She acted like a puppy until her death at 15 years of age. You would think we would have learned…yet an Irish stays in the family! Aside from Pepper, my parents have an Irish Terrier as well and she is a therapy dog who has been visiting assisted living homes for almost 10 years. There is just something about their charm that makes you want to have the breed in your life for ever!

So Happy St. Patrick’s day to all the Irish Dogs! I’m off to celebrate the day with my Irish Terrier, she wouldn’t have it any other way!

Pepper was a challenge to train as many dogs are. Especially the ones that think they are smarter then us! If you need help reaching your goals with your dog, call Follow Me Dog Training LLC and we will help you. We have been there and know the frustration that comes from a strong willed dog!

“The Last Great Race on Earth”

The Iditarod has started! 4 days ago more then 1,000 dogs and 67 mushers gathered in Anchorage Alaska to start one of the hazardous races in the world. Over 1150 miles are covered by the teams in anywhere from 10-17 days.

These dogs are extreme athletes! Racing from Anchorage to Nome Alaska, they hit checkpoints where they feed, have vet checks and get some rest.

Follow Me Dog Training LLC has a friend in Anchorage, On The Ball K9, that has been able to see the start of the race for the past couple years. Check out this video that they put together for this years race start. http://ontheballk9trng.wordpress.com/

Also check out some of these pictures from Sports Illustrated my favorites are #5 and #10!

Good luck to all the dogs and the mushers! Keep track of what is going on at www.iditarod.com
