Leinie’s hanging out at Mongrel

The Where’s Leinie? November 2009 picture found Leinie in front of popular Richmond store, Mongrel. We love their motto: “Cool stuff for all breeds of human” It is a fun store to window shop or find the unique gift for friends or family. Although not dog friendly on the inside, they do have a dog pit stop out front with a water bowl. The neon green chairs make for a good stopping place if you are out on Cary St. checking out the sights.

Congratulations go out to Moose for finding Leinie and posing at Mongrel…bet they got some unusual looks from the people passing by as his picture was taken! Bonus points for using two chairs :) way to go Moose!

Moose wasn’t the only one to find this Richmond Virginia hot spot:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Follow Me Dog Training LLC is thankful for all the wonderful dogs and their owners that we have the opportunity to help throughout the year. We are thankful for the dogs that share our lives and the fun and unconditional love they give us. We are thankful for good health of both the humans and dogs in our lives.

If your dog is spending some of the day alone, take them for a long walk before you leave, they’ll love it and you’ll have an opportunity to burn some calories before a big meal.

Keep in mind that the high fat content and grease that is sometimes associated with a big Turkey meal isn’t very healthy for your dog. Keep in mind that cleaning up after a dog that has shared a rich Thanksgiving meal with you is not the way you want to spend your Black Friday.

If you are having people over to spend the holiday, give your dog plenty of exercise before they come over. A tired dog is a good dog! Also utilize your commands like sit and place throughout the day.

Above all, give your dog a big hug and thank them for being the wonderful animals they are.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Do you know about Pet Cancer?

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Once more, cancer isn’t a disease that should only be thought about during one month out of the year. It is important to be aware that cancer is the #1 disease-related killer of dogs and cats. The Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) have set aside November to educate people about pet cancer.

Overall, cancer claims were the sixth most common type of medical claim received by VPI in 2008. According to VPI’s claims data, which draws from a population of more than 474,000 insured pets, following are the 10 most common types of cancer found in dogs and cats:

Top Pet Cancer Claims in 2008
                  -----------------------------
    1. Lymphosarcoma 6. Neoplasia - Liver
    2. Mast Cell Tumor 7. Neoplasia - Thorax
    3. Neoplasia - Spleen 8. Neoplasia - Brain or Spinal Cord
    4. Neoplasia - Eyelid 9. Fibrosarcoma
    5. Osteogenic Sarcoma 10. Hemangiopericytoma

Showing support for Pet Cancer Awareness can help many families and their pets that find themselves in a bind because of a sudden diagnosis. Just like with human cancer, prevention, detection and treatment are incredible important factors.

Prevention comes in the form of a healthy lifestyles for your pet. This includes good nutritious foods, regular grooming, veterinary exams and proper exercise.

Detection comes from you knowing your dog and looking for signs : Download this free PDF at VPI that list things like, weight loss, sores that don’t heal, and hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina as early warning signs. If you see these signs, follow through with a trip to your vet!

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Don’t be afraid to talk to your vet, to get a second opinion, or to look into a holistic approach to treatment! And like with anything, funds for research are really important so that the treatment your dog may need is successful!

Here are some places you can look if you want to learn more about pet cancer and or support awareness of pet cancer:

Local to us in Richmond Virginia is Fetch a Cure

Follow Me Dog Training LLC supports Fetch a Cure  and encourages you to check out some of their local Richmond events. You also might find a bone tree at a local vet or retail spot… Leinie and I saw one today at Mechanicsville Animal Hospital.

It is unfortunate that many of my clients and friends that own a pet will experience pet cancer first hand. So be aware it is out there and your dog may be affected. Have your dog live a healthy life style and if something seems a little ‘off’ with your dog, consult your vet just to be sure.

Thank you!

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Follow Me Dog Training LLC would like to thank all the men and women that have served in the American Armed Forces throughout the years. Your extreme sacrifice has given us freedom and a safe place to lay our heads at night. Thank you to those that are currently serving and their families for their support. It isn’t said enough…Thank you!

He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.”

Honoring the Few and the Proud

November 10, 2009 marks the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Happy birthday to all the men, women and K9’s that are serving currently or have served in the USMC. Thank you for your dedicated service. Thank you for your valued history and your bravery in battle and in peace.

As a kid I grew up in many different places and will always value the US Marine Corps presence that was at every station. They kept the Embassy where my father worked safe. They helped us through some tough times and they protected us on foreign soil. One of my earliest memories is of hanging out with some of the Marines at our post in Prague CZR. I was just a little kid but they were an integral part of that experience. I remember my mom dressing up for the Marine Corps Ball  held every year to commemorate the USMC birthday. I value very highly the friends that my family and I are still in touch with from that posting especially.

In today’s world it is important to remember who is standing up for our freedom. Since 1775 the USMC has helped defend and fight for our country. We here in Richmond Virginia, are only an hour south of Quantico Virginia and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. You can learn all about the history of the USMC and pay your respects to those that have served our country.

Follow Me Dog Training LLC is a strong supporter of the United States of America and the men, women and K9’s that serve in all branches of our military. Thank you so very much for all you do!
